What is Listing Conversion Rate?

The share of listing sessions that end in a sale, covering all traffic to the detail page rather than ad clicks alone.

The Formula

Unit Session Percentage = Units Ordered ÷ Sessions × 100

Listing conversion rate is the share of visits to your detail page that end in a sale. Amazon reports it in Business Reports as unit session percentage, and it covers every visitor, organic and paid, which is what separates it from advertising CVR.

Read the denominator, and the numerator

Unit session percentage divides units ordered by sessions, so a single order of three units counts as three. An order based rate is a different number, and the two are not interchangeable when you compare against an advertising figure.

A session is a visitor's visit rather than a page load, and Amazon groups a user's activity within a twenty four hour window into one session. Page views count each load, so dividing by page views gives a lower and less useful number. Check which denominator a report uses before comparing two figures.

Parent and child rollups differ for the same reason. A parent listing aggregates the sessions of every variation, so one strong child can carry a weak one and hide the problem.

Why it is the widest lever

Our house view ranks fixing conversion above fixing click-through, and both above chasing impressions, because conversion is the rate with the most room to move on a page you fully control.

It also has a direct arithmetic effect on advertising efficiency, through the identity:

ACoS = CPC ÷ (CVR × AOV)

Suppose a product sells for £30 with a CPC of £0.60 and an advertising conversion rate of 5 per cent. Revenue per click is £30 × 0.05 = £1.50, so ACoS is £0.60 ÷ £1.50, or 40 per cent. Lift conversion to 10 per cent and revenue per click doubles to £3.00, halving ACoS to 20 per cent without touching a single bid. The lever there is advertising CVR, but the fixes that move it are the same page fixes that move the listing rate.

The gate before spending

Compare your conversion rate on a target keyword against the market's conversion on that same keyword in Search Query Performance. Where you sit below the market, more advertising buys traffic that a competitor converts better than you do. Fix the offer first: price, main image, reviews or the page itself. Benchmark against listings at a comparable price and review count, not the category leader, or the comparison tells you nothing you can act on.

Examples

  • Suppose a listing takes 1,000 sessions and 40 ordered units in a week: unit session percentage is 4 per cent
  • At a £30 price and £0.60 CPC, moving conversion from 5 to 10 per cent halves ACoS
