What is Review Velocity?

The rate at which a listing gains new reviews, usually expressed per week or per hundred units sold.

The Formula

Reviews per 100 Units = New Reviews ÷ Units Sold × 100

Review velocity is the rate at which a listing accumulates new reviews, rather than the total it has collected. Expressing it per hundred units sold is more useful than a raw weekly count, because it separates a change in reviewer behaviour from a change in sales volume.

Reviews per 100 units = (New Reviews ÷ Units Sold) × 100

Suppose a product sells 500 units in a month and gains five reviews. That is one review per hundred units. If sales double next month and the review count doubles with them, nothing has changed about the listing. If sales double and reviews stay flat, something has.

Where reviews act on performance

Reviews touch both funnel rates, in different places.

The star rating and review count appear in the search results tile, so they influence whether a shopper clicks at all. The review text sits on the detail page, so it influences whether that click converts. A listing can lose sales to reviews at two separate stages, and the fix differs at each.

The arithmetic of a small base

Amazon does not display a straight average. It has said publicly that the rating shown on a listing is a weighted calculation that takes account of factors such as how recent a review is and whether the purchase was verified, so the figure on the page will not always match the mean of the individual ratings.

The underlying arithmetic still explains the shape of the risk. Taking a simple mean, and supposing a listing holds 5.0:

Reviews beforeOne new 1 star review takes a straight mean to
44.20
94.60
494.92
994.96

Nothing about the product changed between those rows. A new listing is fragile to a single poor experience in a way a mature one is not, which is why fixing the cause of negative reviews early is worth more than fixing it later.

Compliance is the binding constraint

Amazon's community and review policies, and its rules on buyer messaging, prohibit incentivising reviews, offering compensation for them, and asking only satisfied customers to leave one. Enforcement affects the listing and the account, not only the individual review. The compliant levers are the Request a Review function, the Vine programme where the product is eligible, and the product and packaging themselves.

Inserts that steer buyers towards a positive review, or away from a negative one, are the most common way sellers cross this line, usually without intending to.

Reading it alongside the rest

Review velocity moves slowly and reacts late, so it is a trailing indicator. A drop in conversion rate will usually appear before the reviews that explain it. Treat a change in rating as confirmation of something the funnel has already told you, not as the first signal.

Examples

  • Suppose a listing sells 500 units in a month and gains five reviews: one per hundred units
  • On a straight mean, a single 1 star review on a base of four takes a 5.0 average to 4.2
