Amazon India PPC Guide

Amazon India runs on its own registration, its own tax treatment and a festive calendar that moves every year. Learn how to plan PPC for amazon.in.

Marketplace: amazon.in | Currency: INR

Marketplace Overview

Amazon India (amazon.in) opened in June 2013 and is a domestic marketplace in the fullest sense. Selling there normally means an Indian tax identity in the form of a PAN, an Indian bank account, a pickup address in the country and, for most taxable goods, a GST registration, and none of that carries across from a North American or European account. Catalogue, inventory and advertising history all start again, so the sensible way to read your first months of India data is as a launch rather than as an extension of an established brand.

The shopping vocabulary is the second thing that surprises sellers. Listings are written in English and the search box takes Latin characters, but Indian product words are routinely typed in those characters rather than translated. A kurta, a chakki or a chappal is searched by its local name spelled in English letters, and transliteration has no single agreed spelling, so one word can arrive as several distinct search terms. Keyword coverage in India is therefore a spelling problem as much as a translation problem, and the evidence for it lives in your own search term report rather than in a translated word list.

The trading year is shaped by the festive calendar rather than by one fixed retail date. Amazon runs its Great Indian Festival event around the festive season, and the festivals it sits alongside, Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali among them, follow a lunisolar calendar, so they land on different Gregorian dates each year. Republic Day in January and Independence Day in August do not move. Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display are all available on amazon.in, so the advertising toolkit itself is familiar. What has to be rebuilt is the calendar, the tax arithmetic behind your break-even, and the search vocabulary.

PPC Advertising Tips for Amazon India

1

Set dayparting schedules to India Standard Time

India keeps one time zone for the whole country at UTC+05:30, so there is none of the multi-zone smear you have to model in the US. Shurq stores a timezone with each dayparting schedule and defaults it to the marketplace's home zone, which for amazon.in is India Standard Time. Check the schedule shows that zone before you save it, because the default follows whichever marketplace is selected at the time.

2

Work out break-even on the price after tax

Retail prices in India are displayed inclusive of GST, and the rate applied depends on how the product is classified, so two items at the same shelf price can leave you with different net revenue. Set your break-even ACoS from what remains after tax, referral and fulfilment fees, never from the price the shopper sees.

3

Judge campaigns on settled revenue, not order revenue

Pay on Delivery is a standard option on amazon.in, and an order paid at the door can still be refused. Amazon also collects tax at source and shows it as a deduction on your settlement report. Read the settlement rather than the order report before you call a keyword profitable, which is why the cashflow view in Shurq is built from settlement line items instead of order estimates.

4

Harvest spellings rather than guessing them

Transliterated terms have no canonical spelling, so variants of one word arrive as separate search terms and each accrues its own click and order history. Pull the variants out of the search term report and promote the ones with repeat orders on the same product to exact, instead of deriving a keyword list from a translation. Leave the source term running, since it keeps feeding discovery.

5

Build negatives for both vocabularies

Many products on amazon.in are named twice, once in English category language and once in the local word, and the two share almost no tokens. An n-gram list built from one vocabulary will not clean the other, so review and negate the two separately. Negate for irrelevance rather than for poor ACoS, because a converting term with a bad ACoS has a bid problem instead.

6

Align year on year to the festival, not the date

Because the festive cluster shifts by weeks between years, a comparison anchored to calendar dates will line a peak week up against an ordinary one and make a good year look flat. Move the comparison window onto the matching festival before you read the result, and ramp budget against the event calendar rather than last year's dates.

Challenges

  • -Selling normally requires a PAN, an Indian bank account, a local pickup address and, for most taxable goods, a GST registration
  • -Search terms arrive as unstandardised transliterations, so coverage fragments across spellings of the same word
  • -Festive dates move each year, which quietly breaks any year on year comparison anchored to calendar dates
  • -Pay on Delivery and tax collected at source mean advertised order revenue is not settled revenue
  • -There is no cross-region FBA pooling into India, so stock and working capital have to be committed locally

Opportunities

  • +Search term harvesting surfaces transliterated spellings that a translated keyword list would never produce
  • +Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display are all available, so a proven campaign structure transfers without redesign
  • +The festive season concentrates demand into a window you can plan inventory, budget and rank pushes around a year ahead
  • +Easy Ship lets you sell from your own stock with Amazon collecting and delivering, so you can start before committing units to Amazon warehouses
  • +Amazon serves amazon.in through the same European API region as the EU stores, so reporting and tooling built for Europe usually picks up India profiles without new plumbing
