Amazon Saudi Arabia PPC Guide

Amazon Saudi Arabia trades in Arabic, on a Sunday to Thursday week, under its own tax and fulfilment rules. Learn how to build campaigns that fit those conditions instead of porting a Western account across unchanged.

Marketplace: amazon.sa | Currency: SAR

Marketplace Overview

Amazon Saudi Arabia (amazon.sa) opened in June 2020, taking over from Souq.com, and it prices in Saudi riyals. The store runs in Arabic by default with an English view available, and its catalogue, inventory and search results are separate from Amazon.ae next door. Sellers who assume the two Gulf stores behave as one operation find the difference at the point where stock has to physically be in the right country.

Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands both run on this marketplace, so the campaign structures you already use transfer. The integration detail that catches people out is that Saudi Arabia authorises through Amazon's European API endpoint, the same one that serves the UK and Germany, while sitting entirely outside European VAT and the pan-European fulfilment programme. The endpoint is shared. The tax and the logistics are not.

What genuinely changes here is the language of demand and the shape of the week. Shoppers search in Arabic, a right to left script with no capitalisation, several accepted spellings of common letters, and a definite article that attaches to the front of the noun. The working week runs Sunday to Thursday with the weekend on Friday and Saturday, the clock is Arabia Standard Time and does not observe daylight saving, and the Ramadan and Eid season moves against the Gregorian calendar because it follows the lunar one. Each of those facts changes a campaign setting.

PPC Advertising Tips for Amazon Saudi Arabia

1

Build the keyword list in Arabic, not from translation

Translating an English keyword list produces formal written Arabic, which is not what people type into a search box. Start from the terms your own search terms report shows converting, and keep the Latin script spellings shoppers use for brands and technical terms as separate keywords rather than assuming the Arabic form covers them.

2

Cover the spelling variants deliberately

Ordinary Arabic typing admits more than one form of several letters, including the forms of alef, taa marbuta against haa, and alef maqsura against yaa, and the definite article al attaches to the noun to make a different string again. Add the variants a shopper is likely to type instead of trusting one form to match them all.

3

Plan against two calendars at once

Ramadan and the two Eids follow the lunar calendar and fall earlier in the Gregorian year each year, while White Friday sits in November and the national dates fall on 22 February and 23 September. Budget schedules pinned to fixed Gregorian dates drift out of step with the lunar peaks within a few seasons, so rebuild them annually.

4

Anchor bids on revenue per click, then shape placements

There is no such thing as a placement bid. Placement modifiers multiply the keyword bid, so a day rule, an hour rule and a placement modifier all compound on the same number. Set the base bid on the worst converting placement's economics and raise the better placements from there, judged on relative conversion rate rather than placement ACoS.

5

Read the clock and the week in local terms

Arabia Standard Time does not observe daylight saving, so an hour block keeps the same meaning all year and dayparting evidence stays comparable across seasons. The weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, so any pacing rule written around a Monday to Friday week treats the wrong two days as quiet.

6

Settle VAT and fulfilment before you set an ACoS target

The resident registration threshold set by ZATCA does not extend to non resident sellers, so registration can be required from the first taxable supply rather than after a turnover figure is passed. Confirm your own position with an adviser, and if you serve Saudi orders from UAE stock, put the cross border fulfilment charge inside the margin before you decide what ACoS the product can afford.

Challenges

  • -Listings, keywords, images and customer service all need native Arabic, and right to left copy needs design and QA that an English listing never required
  • -VAT registration with ZATCA works differently for non resident sellers, so the obligation can begin with the first taxable supply rather than at a turnover threshold
  • -Inventory does not pool with Amazon.ae, so you either place stock in Saudi fulfilment centres or serve Saudi orders from UAE stock through Amazon's cross border option, which carries its own charge
  • -Arabic search volume data is harder to source than English, so your own search terms report carries more of the research load than it would on a Western marketplace

Opportunities

  • +A listing written properly in Arabic can match queries that an English only listing will never appear against, because those terms are simply not in its index entry
  • +Saudi Arabia can be added under Amazon's global selling programme rather than run as a separate business, so the campaign structure and reporting you already use carry over
  • +Amazon's cross border option, where it is available for your products, lets you serve Saudi orders from UAE stock and test demand before committing inventory to Saudi fulfilment centres
  • +The trading calendar has peaks the Western one does not, in Ramadan and the two Eids, White Friday in November, and the national dates in February and September
  • +No daylight saving means hour of day patterns hold their shape year round, which makes dayparting evidence easier to trust
