Amazon Sweden PPC Guide

Amazon Sweden is a Nordic marketplace where shoppers browse in Swedish and pay in kronor. Learn how to research keywords in a compounding language and time bids to the Swedish retail calendar.

Marketplace: amazon.se | Currency: SEK

Marketplace Overview

Amazon Sweden (amazon.se) opened in 2020 and serves shoppers who browse, search and buy in Swedish. Prices are set and paid in Swedish kronor. Sweden is a member of the European Union but has kept its own currency rather than adopting the euro, so a seller whose costs sit in euros, pounds or dollars carries a live exchange rate gap between the revenue side and the cost side of every unit.

Matching happens on Swedish strings, and Swedish builds words differently from English. Compound nouns are written as a single unspaced word, and the definite article is a suffix on the end of the noun rather than a separate word, so one product noun turns into several distinct surface forms. A listing translated word for word from an English original can therefore miss the exact string a shopper types, which makes native quality Swedish copy a requirement for matching rather than a finishing touch.

Sweden sits on Central European Time alongside Germany, France and Poland, so a seller already advertising in those stores can reuse the shape of an hourly schedule without reusing the numbers behind it. Treat Sweden as its own marketplace with its own search language, its own retail calendar and its own conversion behaviour. A newly opened Swedish account also starts with little search term history of its own, so plan a research and harvesting cycle for it rather than cloning a German or British keyword list into it.

PPC Advertising Tips for Amazon Sweden

1

Research compounds, not phrases

Swedish writes compound nouns as a single unspaced word, so a pram is barnvagn and a coffee cup is kaffekopp. Splitting a compound, known as sarskrivning, is treated as a spelling error rather than an accepted variant, which means an English style two word phrase can miss the exact string a Swedish shopper types. Find the closed compound first and treat any spaced version as a separate, weaker variant.

2

Plan for the suffixed definite article

Swedish marks the word the with a suffix on the end of the noun instead of a separate word, so one product noun appears as several unspaced surface forms: stol, stolen, stolar, stolarna. On a compound the suffix attaches to the whole word, which multiplies the variants again. Each form is a distinct string to match on, so cover them deliberately rather than assuming broad match will bridge them.

3

Harvest Swedish terms rather than translating into them

Machine translation produces correct Swedish that nobody actually searches. Work the source hierarchy in order: discovery tools, then autocomplete for live customer language, then search query data as ground truth, then your own search term reports as in account proof. In a non English marketplace that last source matters most, because it is the only one written in real customer language. English words also circulate in Swedish everyday usage, particularly in technology categories, so test the English term alongside the Swedish one instead of assuming the translated word wins.

4

Anchor the schedule to the Swedish calendar

Gifts are exchanged on julafton, 24 December, not on Christmas Day, so the delivery promise cutoff that matters falls earlier than in markets that open presents on the 25th. The days that follow carry mellandagsrea, the sale across the days between Christmas and New Year. Midsummer in late June is a genuine national pause. Bid these windows by hourly revenue per click deviation against your own baseline. Never day pause and never day budget, because a weak period deserves a lower bid, not absence.

5

Watch the multiplier stack on a new marketplace

A placement modifier multiplies the already adjusted bid rather than the original, so a day rule, an hour rule and a placement modifier compound into a far larger effective bid than any one of them suggests. That bites hardest in a marketplace where you have little history to sanity check the result against. Set placement modifiers on relative conversion rate, never on placement ACoS, using modifier percent equals placement conversion rate divided by worst placement conversion rate, minus one, times one hundred.

6

Settle VAT, stock location and currency before setting targets

Swedish VAT is administered by Skatteverket, with a standard rate and reduced rates for certain categories, so confirm the current rate that applies to your own products before you model anything. Holding stock in Sweden generally creates a Swedish VAT registration obligation, whereas serving Swedish orders from inventory held in another EU country is a different position that carries a cross border fulfilment cost instead. Both change your landed cost, so take advice, record your cost of goods against the Swedish marketplace in its own currency, and only then set an ACoS target, because break even is a function of all three.

Challenges

  • -Listings and keywords need native quality Swedish, not machine translation
  • -Compound spelling and suffixed definite forms multiply the keyword variants you must cover
  • -Revenue in kronor against euro, pound or dollar costs leaves an exchange rate gap inside your margin
  • -Local stock brings a Swedish VAT registration obligation, while fulfilling from abroad brings cross border costs instead
  • -A newly opened Swedish account has little search term history of its own to harvest from at the start

Opportunities

  • +Shoppers search in Swedish, so listings written in Swedish match queries that translated listings miss
  • +Shares the Central European clock with Germany, France and Poland, so an existing hourly schedule shape transfers
  • +The compound and definite forms give you a long list of exact strings that reward deliberate coverage
  • +A distinct retail calendar of julafton, mellandagsrea and midsummer gives clear, plannable bidding windows
  • +Swedish orders can be served from EU inventory held elsewhere, so demand can be tested before committing local stock
